We are a small group of people who meet regularly to consider how best to help our Parish to become more aware of the Social Teaching of the Church. We also try to encourage the members of the Parish to respond to particular needs or issues, local, national and international, as they arise.
We support the justice and peace initiatives which are already part of our Parish life: Regular CAFOD and Missio collections, Fairtrade Stall (We have been a Fairtrade Parish for eleven years) and monthly Swindon Foodbank collection. We now organise a bi-monthly collection of coffee, sugar and biscuits to enable the Harbour Project for refugees and asylum seekers to offer hospitality. Individuals in the Parish are involved with fundraising and volunteering for The Medaille Trust, Christmas Care and the Sleep Out for Threshold Housing Link.
In 2015 and this year, we have supported the Mary’s Meals Backpack project and this year the Parish sent 122 Backpacks for children who are being fed by the charity in schools in different parts of the world. Together with other members of Churches Together in Swindon Centre, members raised money for CAFOD and Christian Aid at Lent Lunches.
Using Holy Rood Primary School premises next door, we hosted Lent and Harvest Fast day briefings for CAFOD and learnt much about the work of CAFOD in Uganda and Bolivia. Different members of the group spoke at all the masses for Lent Fast day. We also organised the retiring collection for the CAFOD emergency appeal for Ethiopia.
In response to Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si” we ran study groups to encourage people to think carefully about climate change and the way we care for our planet. We maintain a Help and Advice board in church which is a source of information about the many agencies that can respond to particular needs.
